Indiana Oncology Nursing Society Symposium

We understand that nurses are an important and integral member of the team of providers of cancer patients and frequently provide immediate bedside care for all cancer patients and are the first point of contact. Therefore, education of these important members of the medical oncology team is warranted and imperative if treatment outcomes are to be improved, particularly for patients treated in community oncology practice.

Rare Diseases Symposium

Rare diseases frequently treated in the community can pose a major challenge to treating physicians, advanced practitioners, and nurses. Additionally, there is sometimes a lack of consensus criteria for the management of these disorders. The rarity of the disease states further exacerbates these issues; therefore, there are infrequent presentations to treating physicians who have difficulty establishing significant expertise in treating these rare conditions. However, despite the rarity of these diseases, most patients are treated in the community. Thus, the education of providers in community practice is imperative and warranted to promote a better understanding of the diagnosis, treatment, and emerging therapeutics for the management of these disorders.
